There are 3 aspects to get a dream body or to give optimum performance in
a sport viz;
1)Execise
2)Nutrition
3)Rest
You plan your workout;this particular day I’ll train this
particular body part or do this particular type of training,so and so number of
sets so and so number of repetitions,etc.You hire a trainer or a coach.
You plan your nutrition intake;so and so amount of
Carbs/Protein/Fats & micros along with it,you evenly distribute your
nutrition intake throughout the day.You consult a nutritionist for your nutritional
needs.
But what about the third aspect “Rest”,it’s the most ignored
aspect.People rarely plan it or have knowledge about it.If your goal is to
build muscles 10-40% depends upon exercise & 60-90% depends upon nutrition
& "Rest" is the base upon which these two aspects work.If your exercise &
nutrition is perfect but you ain’t resting enough you won’t be able to achieve
your fitness goal.6-8 hours of deep uninterrupted sleep at night & 10-30 minutes of deep uninterrupted sleep in
day time is very necessary.Maximum recovery & growth happens in sleep,maximum
growth hormone is secreted in sleep.You must have observed that children in
growing age/babies sleep longer than adults because their growth is happening.
Children sleep more because they grow
Suppose you have planned your sleep for 7 hours{12-7 at
night}immediately after lying down on the bed you ain’t going to go in deep
sleep,at 11.40/11.45 you should lie down on the bed keeping your eyes closed keeping away all the distractions then somewhat at 12 o’clock you’ll go in deep sleep.
There are 2 types of rests
1)Sleep-which is rest without awareness.
2)Meditation-which is rest with
awareness.
Both types of rests are necessary.
Meditation should be done 3 times a day-before
breakfast,before lunch & post workout or before dinner.One of the
reasons why people in ancient India used to meditate/pray before having a meal
is your blood circulation becomes normal & your body absorbs the food you
eat.As mentioned earlier when you lie down on the bed,immediately you ain’t
going to go in deep sleep,the same is with meditation,when you sit for
meditation,immediately you ain’t going to go in deep meditative state.Therefore,in
order to instantly go in deep meditative state “Sudarshan Kriya” should be done
which is a breathing technique taught in the Art of Living part 1 course.It
should be done once in a day and after which the meditations that you do
throughout the day are deep.Meditations also improve the quality of your sleep,you get into deep sleep faster than usual & you have an uninterrupted sleep.
Meditation rejuvenates your 7 systems viz;
1)Central Nervous System-It removes fatigue from your
nervous system faster than usual.We usually train in double or triple splits(2
days weight training-2 days rest/cardio or 1 day weight training-1 day
rest/cardio)in order to get rid of the fatigue caused on our nervous system.
2)Digestive system-Your metabolism improves,body
starts responding better to a given nutrition plan.
3)Cardiovascular system-Your heart health remains sound,meditation
reduces chances of heart attack.Blood circulation in your body improves &
blood vessels also remain healthy.
4)Muscular system-When you workout micro trauma is
created on your muscles,meditation heals the micro trauma faster than usual.If
you have any injuries they get recovered faster as meditation works on a deep foundation level & acts like a catalyst in recovering injuries.
5)Endocrine system-Chemical communication in your
body takes place efficiently.Mind muscle connection happens easily,your muscle contractions become stronger.Now a days
we see youths who abuse drugs & face problems like erectile dysfunction at
a tender age.Meditation rejuvenates your endocrine system and such diseases may
get cured.
6)Respiratory system-If there is any blockage in your
nasal passage or trachea it gets cleared,toxins in your lungs get
removed.Moreover,more than 80% of the toxins in our body are removed via
breath.
7)Immune system-Meditation improves your immunity
& prevents you from getting contagious diseases.Air pollution is rising day
by day due to which people catch cold and cough very quickly meditation rejuvenates
your immune system thereby reducing chances of getting cold and cough.
While working out our body secretes “cortisol” which is a
stress hormone that eats up your muscle and builds fat,meditation reduces cortisol
levels.Therefore,meditating post workout is very necessary.Best time to measure
cortisol is early morning empty stomach 8 o’clock,you can measure cortisol
levels without meditating and after meditating,you’ll find a big difference between the
two.Moreover,your brain secretes oxytocin,dopamine and serotonin which are the feel good hormones that keep you happy and therefore your body starts responding better to a given nutrition & workout and plan.A person who is unhappy,stressed or under tension his body does not respond so well.
Meditation also reduces chances of blackouts,blackouts
happen due to inadequate supply of blood to the brain,meditation supplies
adequate blood to the brain.Moreover,it also increases grey matter in the
